Driving the digital transformation across the world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is among the most important technologies for the betterment of life quality nowadays. According to Goldman Sachs Research in 2023, Generative AI could drive a 7% (or almost US$7 trillion) increase in global GDP and lift productivity growth by 1.5 percentage points over a 10-year period.
CUHK is one of the leading institutions in Asia in machine learning and AI research. The Faculty of Engineering hosts 30 IEEE Fellows and 4 ACM Fellows. Many of our faculty members dedicate their research in AI and machine learning under the theme of Information and Automation Technology, one of the four Strategic Areas of CUHK. They have been creating a significant impact on different fields, in both STEM and non-STEM disciplines.
30+ elective courses available for building a flexible curriculum tailored to students’ career-development objectives. Our electives cover topics from advanced machine learning theory to key AI application domains, including robotics, life science and medicine, financial technology, Internet-of-Things and edge AI, computational imaging, neuromorphic computing, speech and language processing, IC design, and big-data analytics.
Students can opt for the course titled 'From Business Plan to Investable AI Ventures'. The course is designed to turn innovative and creative students into entrepreneurs through multi-disciplinary, hands-on and project-based learning. Students are expected to conduct case studies, participate in a field-trip to visit AI organizations and high-tech companies for a close-up on the operation of these organizations, and even pitch their ideas to companies.
Provided to those who are interested in acquiring practical skills and knowledge by attaching to a company for at least 12 weeks. The student will have an academic supervisor (as primary supervisor) and an industry co-supervisor from the company, both have the expertise to provide advices to the student.
6-unit 2-semester project course available under the supervision of a faculty member in the Faculty of Engineering. Each student will engage in a fascinating research problem. The research findings may be disseminated in international conferences or journal publications.
Enhances students’ practical knowledge and communication skills through frequent interactions with experienced industrial practitioners. The programme not only strengthens students’ abilities, but also inspires their insight on future career development.
